huh. i never posted these anywhere, but i was commissioned for these a couple years ago for a comic project thing
Funnily enough, the idea I had here was two separate cat things. I thought about a little ghostie pin-cushion cat, which would turn into a little voodoo cat. I also had the idea for a little piggybank cat which would turn into a sort of statue-esque maneki neko. They liked both ideas, and interpreted it as me pitching the maneki neko as the third form… so I fixed it up a little to go with the plush feel and that’s how this strange critter came about, haha.
Someone on my personal blog seemed interested in the process, so I decided to post a general example of sketches I would make and show before anything in particular was approved (and when things were sometimes suggested)
I wanted to do some sort of fox, even though they already had one - in particular, I wanted to do a slit eyes trickster fox. Recently at that point, I had been liking clowns and jesters in art, so I decided to kind of go with that theme for this fellow… but not at first! I only decided on the trickster part at first, which can be seen in the first sheet. I put the drawings out of my mind for a couple of weeks before realizing I wanted to add in the jester sort of theme, which is where all the other sketches came from.
All in all, I liked making this fox the most, and the pin-cushion cat second most (though it’s really hard to pick favorites!)
Hopefully if the game does well, I might get to design some more pets after we get all the animations in it.
Everybody Loves a Chameleon by purplekecleon aka Melanie Herring is up for voting. She says, “I love chameleons. You love chameleons. ~Everybody~ loves chameleons. I love their colors, the crazy way their toes look, their weird eyes, mouths. I can’t even believe how many varieties there are of this great little critter.”
Aw sweet, on the Threadless blog itself! Vote for my shirt please!!
